John Blakey is one of the leading watercolour artists of his generation who is known for his impressive style of painting portraits and still loves using traditional techniques drawn from the great masters. Watercolour is a medium that demands great skill. Painting using this medium with utmost perfection is a challenge for the most experienced artist. Using a carefully limited palette, he creates realistic portraits in a nuanced observational style that is sympathetic to his subjects without romanticizing them. These paintings just enthrall the viewer, coming alive by capturing his subjects down to the finest detail, showing the beauty and celebrating the humanity that underlies their often rugged and weatherworn features. John is a member of The Watercolour Society of Ireland and in 2018 was awarded the President's prize and Dr Pat McCabe Cup for his painting: "The Flower Seller of Muinchille".
